Cadillac has distilled Escalade-level luxury down to a smaller size with the 2022 XT5, but it has lost some of the flagship's prestige in the process. The exterior styling of the XT5 is attractive and upscale; the well-equipped cabin is quiet while cruising, and there's plenty of space for four adults and their luggage. However, there is little room for mediocre entrants in the brisk compact luxury SUV market, and the XT5's flaws only serve to highlight more impressive rivals such as the BMW X3 and the Genesis GV70.
A turbocharged four-cylinder engine is standard, and a V-6 engine is optional; neither engine is particularly powerful or refined. The XT5's ride over pockmarked roads can be harsh, and its stiff-leggedness doesn't translate to thrilling handling like the Mercedes-AMG GLC-class or the Porsche Macan. Unfortunately, the XT5 is a miss from General Motors' most prestigious brand.

The 2022 XT5 range begins with a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $43,995, plus a destination charge, in Luxury trim with front-wheel drive.
The mid-level Premium Luxury model offers the best value and delivers on the brand's luxury promises, with desirable standard features like leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, a hands-free liftgate, wireless charging, and more. We'd go with the more powerful optional V-6 engine, but only with front-wheel drive. If you want it, all-wheel drive is an option.
