Among Ford's extensive lineup of trucks and SUVs, the 2022 Explorer is best suited for family duty. With three rows of seats and plenty of cargo space, the Explorer is ideal for parents who need to transport their children and all of their belongings.

The Explorer's base engine is a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder with 300 horsepower, but a hybrid powertrain and a 400-hp twin-turbo V-6 engine are also available. Although the Ford has a plethora of tech features and driver aids, its overall package isn't as polished as other mid-size rivals that simply offer more refinement, such as the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, and Jeep Grand Cherokee L.

2022 Ford Explorer Price

The starting price for the entry-level Ford Explorer is $33,245, which is about average for a midsize SUV. The Platinum trim costs $55,740, which is more than the top trims of many competitors. The Explorer Hybrid, which we review separately, is also available from Ford.

The mid-level Limited model, in our opinion, is the best Explorer for the money. While the hybrid is appealing to those who can benefit from its high EPA-rated city mpg, we found the standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine to be more powerful and efficient on the highway. When equipped with the towing package, it can tow a hefty 5300 pounds.

For an additional $1920, we'd add all-wheel drive. Aside from that, we believe the desirable standard features of the Limited trim will suffice. A 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, 20-inch wheels, a heated and power-adjustable steering wheel, leather upholstery, a power-folding third row, and upgraded driver aids such as adaptive cruise control are among the features.
