The Ford Explorer is an excellent SUV. It has a large cargo hold, numerous tech and safety features, and powerful engines; its base four-cylinder engine outperforms some rivals' V6s. The Explorer is also adaptable, with trims geared toward performance, off-roading, and luxury. However, the interior falls short. The cabin is basic, passenger space in the second and third rows is limited, and the upgraded infotainment system has a few quirks that make it difficult to use.
2022 Ford Explorer Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The Explorer has varying EPA fuel-economy ratings due to its numerous powertrain and drivetrain combinations. The rear-drive hybrid model is the most fuel-efficient, with estimates of up to 27 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. When all-wheel drive is added, the hybrid's ratings drop by 3 and 4 mpg, respectively.
We put one through its paces on our 75-mph highway route, and it only got 24 mpg. In comparison, the 400-hp Explorer ST achieved 25 mpg in our testing, exceeding the EPA rating by 1. We also put the four-cylinder Explorer with all-wheel drive through its paces. The government estimates that version will get 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway; we got 28 mpg.
There's a lot to like about the Ford Explorer, but there are plenty of other appealing midsize SUVs to consider. The Chevrolet Traverse is similarly priced, but it has more passenger and cargo space than the Ford, while the Toyota Highlander has a more luxurious interior. You might also want to consider the Explorer Hybrid, which is more fuel-efficient.
